Last Friday I went to see the fireworks display at Syracuse's Inner Harbor. It was a fantastic display! I sat on the end of one of the piers, with my feet hanging over the water, and watched the fireworks being shot off directly in front of me on the other side of the harbor, the closest view possible. The only down-side was having the ash and paper bits rain down on me.

Here in my neighborhood, fireworks have been going off for weeks building to a grand crescendo of noise last night. From 7pm to 10pm, I estimated that I could hear an AVERAGE of 100 bursts per minute. Part of that was the noise from the 3 public displays in the city: at the stadium, the Fairgrounds, and another display at the Inner Harbor. I didn't go to any of the 3 public displays on the 4th, but just staying home I could view fireworks coming from about a dozen different locations in my neighborhood, and could hear them from many hundreds of different locations in the city. The light rain/drizzle didn't seem to have any effect of the quantity of fireworks used. Even though fireworks are outlawed for use by nonprofessionals in New York State, they are widely used in Syracuse. The police usually turn a blind eye toward most users. The Pennsylvania line is just a 1½ hour drive south of the city, with a number of fireworks stands just over the PA/NY border.

As usual, Casey worked herself into a state of absolute PANIC, and no amount of consolation could ease her hyperventilation and wild-eyed expressions. In the past week, she spent a lot of time hiding in the bathroom, or under furniture. At one point she had her head buried in the dining room drapes, and pushed between the wall and the sideboard!! ...poor Casey!

On the other hand, Adam was totally unfazed by the noise!!

Around 9pm I dug out my small collection of Roman candles and rockets bought in Pennsylvania last year, and shot them off in the back yard. Casey hid inside for that show, but Adam got very excited seeing the fireworks, and I had to stop him from getting too close and trying to catch the sparks with his mouth!! I heard a spent rocket, from one of my neighbors, fall through the trees in a corner of my yard. Adam heard it too, but before I could stop him, Adam had found it and proudly carried his trophy around by it's stick!!! ...until I took it away from him.

I hope you all had a great holiday!!!
