Halloween 2007
Nov. 1st, 2007 12:20 amIt was a beautiful, warm day with the temperature nearly 70 degrees (20 C), perfect weather for Halloween. Mark and I only worked until 2:30, which gave me time to get the house ready. I took the glass insert out of the upper half of the front storm door so that I could pass out candy through the door rather than keep opening and closing it. Then I carved one of the pumpkins (the other one was starting to rot), and set it out on the porch railing, lit with a candle. And I opened up the coffin full of Gummy body parts and set it on a chair near the front door.
The first trick-or-treater rang the doorbell at 4:45. It was a 5 year old girl dressed in a bumblebee costume, holding her mother's hand. When I opened the door, Adam and Casey started barking furiously. The little girl backed away and started crying. I apologized and gave her a KitKat. After that I put the dogs in the back yard.
Most, but not all of the kids wore costumes. Some of the better ones were: Wonder Woman. a cat, the sun, and a ghost. One 7-year-old witch exclaimed: "Oooooo!!! ...I got an eyeball!!!" with obvious glee as she left the house. When a mother with a 4-year-old girl received her candy the Mom said to her: "Say Thank you." The little girl turned to her Mom and said, "Thank you, Mom." Almost all of the kids said "Thank you."
One rather cute black guy in his early 20s rode up on a bicycle, no costume, and simply said: "I'm just doing this cause I want some candy."
Only a few kids rang the bell before 6:00, and I started to worry that I would be stuck with a bunch of Gummy candy that I don't like, so I started giving out 2 pieces to each kid. By the time I turned off the porch lights at 8:15, 53 kids had come to the house. I managed to give away 99 body parts, ...and kept most of the bag of KitKats for myself. ;-)
