Today was cold and blustery, with fierce winds and blowing snow. In spite of that, I drove to the Holiday Inn at Carrier Circle to be with one of the great loves of my life! ...No, it wasn't a romantic tryst in a hotel room, but a Stamp Show in one of the hotel's banquet rooms.

That's right, I LOVE collecting stamps! I started collecting when I was 9 years old, getting my first stamp album for Christmas in 1963, ~ and Stamps have been the love of my life ever since. I collect any and all stamps that I can get my hands on, but my favorite area is pre-1940 foreign stamps, called 'the classics' among collectors.

I find stamp collecting very satisfying; It is my own little world that I can organize and arrange as I like. It ties in nicely with my interests in history and geography, and perhaps created those interests initially. For me, my stamp collection is a very personal thing. I don't show it to many people. More people have seen me naked than have seen my collection, ...and I'm not an exhibitionist.

This is what a stamp show looks like. The Syracuse shows are held 4 or 5 times per year. Typically 12 to 15 stamp dealers set up their stock at tables where collectors can look through, and buy whatever stamps they like. This photo is of a show here in Syracuse last year. Most shows look a little more busy than this one. (I did not take this photo.)3 More Pictures )
