Strange worm
Jun. 12th, 2009 09:46 amWe had a heavy rainstorm last night. This morning, Mark went out to the garden to check on his tomato plants. He called me outside saying there was something I had to see right away.
In Mark's little plot of garden there was something that looked like a thread, ~but it was moving!! It was flailing about like a tiny snake, but far smaller than any new-born snakes that I have seen. It was about 4 inches (10 cm) long, and as thin as a thread. Mark picked it up on a stick, and we put it on my scanner, where it writhed, wriggled, and knotted itself up into a ball of loops.

I went back out to the garden, and looked to see if there were any others. Sure enough, there was another one slithering around. This shot gives a better sense of its tiny size~ it is dwarfed by the blades of grass.

I Googled "worm" and "hair", and came up with its probable identification: It is a Horsehair worm. The name describes it well.
I have never seen anything like this before!
