Life in Coldernell, NY

This has been a brutal winter so far, one of the coldest that I can remember. The drain under the tub in my bathroom froze a few weeks ago. It was easily fixed with a half cup of table salt and some hot water. The frozen water line to the dishwasher was a different matter. It froze hard and I couldn't run the dishwasher for weeks. The pipe runs through a crawl space under the kitchen floor, and above the old cistern for the house. I feared that if I managed to crawl into the space, I may never get out again, so I bribed my 19-year-old worker, Tony, to crawl under the kitchen and place a 60 watt clip-on light on the pipe, with a long extension cord running from an outlet in the basement. Even with the light clipped to the pipe, it took more than a day to thaw out the frozen pipe. I'm thankful that I don't have to hand wash all the dishes anymore.

I clipped this chart from the local paper this week. We may get more snow on Sunday, and the season is far from over. We are winning the Snow Race right now with 114.1 inches of the gol dang stuff. [That is 290 centimeters of snow for those of you who are metrically inclined.] Buffalo is close behind with 106.6 inches. Albany and Rochester trail farther behind.
